What Are Some Signs That I May Need a Hip Replacement?

Chronic, long-term pain is hard to ignore as it affects every aspect of your life. It makes it difficult to perform daily activities, not to mention engaging in sports and other forms of exercise. If you have severe, debilitating osteoarthritis, other arthritic conditions, or have been diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN), or a hip fracture, a total hip replacement may be an appropriate treatment for your condition. Some other signs that you may need a hip replacement include:

1. Hip pain hinders walking, bending, or stooping.

2. You limp or shift weight to lessen hip pain.

3. A cane or walker is needed for hip pain relief.

4. Hip pain disrupts or prevents sleep.

5. Increasing painkiller doses is necessary for hip pain.

6. Pain persists despite exercise, stretching, massages, and physical therapy.

FAQs

Why Get a Hip Replacement?

Hip replacement surgery is often needed due to osteoarthritis, a condition common in older adults. Most people undergoing this surgery are between 50 to 80 years old. Hip replacement is a complicated procedure and should be a last resort after trying other treatments like physical therapy without success.

Procedures We Perform

At Stride Physical Therapy , we offer several hip replacement surgeries:

1. Anterior approach: Surgeons make a front incision to reach the hip, sparing the gluteal muscles for quicker, free hip movement post-surgery.

2. Posterior and mini-posterior approach: These methods give surgeons excellent visibility of the hip joint for effective surgery and feature a rapid, less painful recovery.

3. Hip resurfacing: Damaged hip parts are replaced with metal implants, conserving much of the femoral head and readying it for implant placement.

4. Hip revision surgery: We replace old or failed hip replacements, either partially or completely, to resolve issues such as wear or infection. Stride Physical Therapy's experienced, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons excel in this intricate surgery.
